Zoning Board meeting of August 11
The Zoning Board of Adjustment has a meeting scheduled for August 11, 2008. There will not be any applications heard at that meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for September 15, 2008.
Special Meeting of the Mayor & Council
There will be a special meeting of the Governing Body of the Borough of Dumont held August 7, 2008 at 6:30 PM in the Council Chambers of Borough Hall. The subject matter includes budget amendment, personnel and other matters.
Meeting change of time
The August 19, 2008 Executive Meeting of the Governing Body of the Borough of Dumont will begin at 6:00 PM in the Council Executive Chambers at Borough Hall, 50 Washington Avenue, Dumont, NJ.
Dumont Day registration still available
It is not too late to sign up for a booth for this year's Dumont Day celebration, to be held September 13th at Memorial Park. Signups at the Borough Hall are ongoing.

Shade Tree Commission meetings
BOROUGH OF DUMONT

The Shade Tree Commission of the Borough of Dumont meets every 3rd Monday of the month at 7:30PM at the Dixon Homestead Library located at 180 Washington Avenue, Dumont, N.J. If the library is closed the meeting will be held at Borough Hall located at 50 Washington Avenue. In July and August meetings are held at Memorial Park, weather permitting. Formal action may or may not be taken.

Hand-Held Cell Phone/Texting Law
HAND-HELD CELL PHONE/TEXTING PRIMARY OFFENSE • MARCH 1, 2008
On November 2, 2007, Governor Jon S. Corzine signed into law a bill which amends N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 to make the use of a wireless hand-held telephone or electronic communication device by the operator of a moving motor vehicle a primary offense. The complete text of the law amending N.J.S.A. 39:4-97.3 can be found at P.L. 2007, c.198.
OVERVIEW OF AMENDED LAW
1. It is a primary offense for a motorist to talk or text message with a hand-held wireless telephone or electronic communication device while driving.
2. Use of a hand-held wireless telephone or electronic communication device includes, but is not limited to:
A. Talking or listening to another person.
B. Text messaging or sending an electronic message.
3. The fine for violating this statute is $100.00; no points will be assessed for the offense.
4. The operator of a motor vehicle may use a hand-held wireless telephone while driving with one hand on the steering wheel only if:
A. The operator has reason to fear for his/her life or safety, or believes that a criminal act may be perpetrated against him/herself or another person.
B. The operator is using this device to report to appropriate authorities: a fire; traffic crash; serious road hazard; medical or hazardous material emergency; or another motorist who is driving in a reckless, careless or otherwise unsafe manner or who appears to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
5. The amended law takes effect on March 1, 2008.
6. The Division of Highway Traffic Safety, in partnership with the Motor Vehicle Commission, will conduct a public education campaign beginning in mid-February.

2008 Schedule for the Home Hazardous Waste Management and Disposal Program
The Borough of Dumont has been notified by the Bergen County Utilities Authority that the 2008 schedule for the Home Hazardous Waste Management and Disposal Program has been announced.
The BCUA has added one (1) additional date to the schedule and will now conduct eight (8) household hazardous waste collection events during 2008. These one-day events will be held at different locations for a Bergen County at the weekend dates throughout the year. The 2008 household hazardous waste collection events are scheduled for following dates and locations:

All event hours are 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. rain or shine. The household hazardous waste management program offers Bergen County residents the opportunity to properly dispose of household hazardous waste items such as aerosol cans, paints, pesticides, solvents and many other hazardous items commonly found a home. These events are available free of charge to all Bergen County residents. Small businesses can also deliver up to 220 pounds of hazardous waste to the collection events for a predetermined disposal fee. Pre-registration is required for small businesses. Residents and interested parties can contact the household hazardous waste management hotline at 201-807-5825 or visit the program at www.BCUA.org anytime of the day for scheduling of events for a list of household waste products been collected or to receive a household waste registration and service inventory form.
The BCUA has also announced the 2008 Tire Recycling a Computer/Electronics Program.

Grants and loan programs available for funding remediation of contamination
The Department of Environmental Protection has informed the Borough that they have opened a grant and loan programs offered to both homeowners and commercial property owners for funding remediation of contamination caused by leaking underground storage tanks.
Recent legislative changes have added a non-leaking tank component to the UST Fund. The fund awards grants for the proactive removal and replacement of homeowner heating oil tanks.
